Francavilla has a long history of undeniable historical and artistic value<\/strong>. Founded in the Lombard period<\/strong>, it bears witness to the fact that the area of Francavilla was home, from the earliest times, to important settlements whose continuity can be documented over the centuries.<\/p>

The first true settlement<\/strong> dates back to the period around 568\/569<\/strong> and was established on a hilltop by a community<\/strong> of fishermen and farmers free from feudal obligations<\/strong>. This is the origin of the name Francavilla, referring to the status of its citizens, who were freed from feudal rule.<\/p>

In ancient times, the village was surrounded by perimeter walls<\/strong> with three entrance gates: Porta Ripa<\/strong> and Porta San Franco<\/strong>, which faced the countryside, and Porta della Marina<\/strong>, facing the sea. It was also equipped with around twelve defensive towers.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The birth of the \u201cPearl of the Adriatic\u201d<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Nel 1501<\/strong>, Francavilla divenne feudo di Costanza D\u2019Avalos D\u2019Aquino<\/strong> con il titolo di ducato<\/strong> e poi di principato<\/strong>; da questa, per donazione, pass\u00f2 ad Alfonso D\u2019Avalos D\u2019Aquino, principe di Montesarchi<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>

Solo nel 1602<\/strong>, la terra di Francavilla venne in possesso della famiglia Caracciolo<\/strong>, marchesi di Volturara<\/strong>, che l\u2019aveva acquistata per 25.00 ducati da Isabella D\u2019Avalos, oppressa dai debiti;
nel 1648<\/strong> Francavilla torn\u00f2 tra i possedimenti dei D\u2019Avalos<\/strong>, marchesi di Pescara e del Vasto, che la tennero fino all\u2019abolizione della feudalit\u00e0<\/strong>. Negli ultimi decenni dell’800<\/strong> lungo la spiaggia si sviluppo\u2019 il quartiere della Marina<\/strong>, con al centro il Palazzo della Sirena<\/strong>. Il lungo viale alberato, le ricche ville disposte a scacchiera sul mare e gli eleganti alberghi trasformarono Francavilla in una rinomata stazione balneare<\/strong>, facendole conquistare il titolo di \u201cPerla dell\u2019Adriatico<\/strong>\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In 1501<\/strong>, Francavilla became the fief of Costanza D\u2019Avalos D\u2019Aquino<\/strong>, with the title first of duchy<\/strong> and then of principality<\/strong>. Through a donation, it later passed to Alfonso D\u2019Avalos D\u2019Aquino, Prince of Montesarchi<\/strong>.<\/p>

It was only in 1602<\/strong> that the territory of Francavilla came into the possession of the Caracciolo<\/strong> family, Marquises of Volturara<\/strong>, who had purchased it from Isabella D\u2019Avalos, burdened by debt, for 25,000 ducats.<\/p>

In 1648<\/strong>, Francavilla returned to the possessions of the D\u2019Avalos<\/strong> family, Marquises of Pescara and Vasto, who held it until the abolition of feudalism<\/strong>. In the final decades of the 19th century<\/strong>, the Marina district<\/strong> developed along the beach, with Palazzo della Sirena<\/strong> at its centre. The long tree-lined avenue, the elegant villas laid out in a grid by the sea and the refined hotels transformed Francavilla into a renowned seaside resort<\/strong>, earning it the title of \u201cPearl of the Adriatic<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

He transformed it into a centre for meetings<\/strong> and literary exchange<\/strong>, where artists, writers and intellectuals shared experiences<\/strong>, ideas<\/strong> and reflections<\/strong>.<\/p>

In the winter of 1943\u201344, during the Second World War, the town remained on the front line for many months and was razed to the ground by mines laid by the occupying German troops. The destruction affected both the upper town and the coast in their entirety.<\/p>
