Exploring Francavilla al Mare by bike is ideal thanks to its strategic location along the Adriatic Cycle Route and its flat seafront terrain. Cyclists can easily ride towards Pescara and Montesilvano, while the town is also the perfect starting point for reaching the famous Via Verde along the Trabocchi Coast.
Francavilla is crossed from north to south by a shared cycling and pedestrian path running along Via F. P. Tosti, Viale Kennedy and Viale Alcione. This is a strategic section of the wider Adriatic Cycle Route, also known as Bike to Coast.
Starting from the border with the municipality of Ortona, the route reaches and crosses the new and iconic Ponte del Mare bridge, allowing cyclists to travel uninterrupted to Pescara while following the coastline.
The Via Verde dei Trabocchi is an approximately 42-kilometre cycling and pedestrian path dedicated to sustainable mobility. It runs along the Abruzzo coastline, following the route of the former Adriatic railway line.
As you travel along the Via Verde dei Trabocchi, you can admire the extraordinary natural beauty of the Abruzzo coast. Majestic cliffs overlook the sea, while hidden coves invite you to stop for a while and enjoy the sound of the waves and the peaceful atmosphere. The route also passes through nature reserves, where local flora and wildlife thrive in protected habitats.
An important service for users of the cycle path is the Trabocchi Line, Trenitalia’s summer regional railway service. It covers approximately 60 kilometres of the Abruzzo Adriatic coastline between Francavilla al Mare and Vasto, providing convenient access to the Via Verde aboard modern trains equipped with dedicated bicycle spaces.
The Trabocchi Bike Station, located inside the Francavilla al Mare railway station, at Piazza Benedetto Croce 1, is a key local hub for urban mobility, intermodality and cycle tourism.
This new service by Bikelife, a tour operator specialising in active holidays, provides everything needed by those who travel by bicycle, whether for leisure or for work.
Francavilla al Mare has always paid particular attention to sustainable and intermodal mobility. Thanks to the region’s railway network and the bike + train combination, visitors and commuters can explore Abruzzo easily, combining cycling with rail travel.
At the Bike Station, visitors can find information about cycling routes and itineraries, maps and useful advice on nutrition and biomechanics. A bicycle rental service is also available, offering city bikes, mountain bikes, road bikes and e-bikes, as well as organised bike tours.
The Bike Station also provides secure storage for bicycles and luggage, serving workers, students and commuters arriving at or departing from Francavilla al Mare station, train and bus passengers, people who live or work nearby, and those returning to the area at weekends or during holidays.
The workshop also offers an express service for emergency repairs, together with a self-service repair station. Cyclists can also check tyre pressure and recharge their e-bikes; both of these services are provided free of charge.
Francavilla al Mare offers a bike-sharing service, making the town part of the sustainable mobility network through a project promoted by the Abruzzo Region in partnership with TUA and operated via the VAIMOO platform. The service allows users to travel easily along the coast and connect with neighbouring towns.
To use the bicycles, simply download the VAIMOO Bike Sharing app, view the map of available stations and reserve a bike, which will be held for 30 minutes. You can start your ride by scanning the QR code on the bike or selecting it directly in the app.
At the end of the ride, the bike must be returned to one of the designated docking stations. Tap “End ride” to complete the rental correctly. The service also includes a “Pause” function for short stops away from the stations; however, the rental time will continue to run.
There are currently five active docking stations: one in Piazza IV Novembre, one at the railway station and three in the Piazza Adriatico area. Two additional stations will soon be installed in the southern part of Francavilla. Passengers with a valid TUA travel ticket will also be eligible for discounts on bike rentals.
Bike rentals, sports equipment, courts, gyms and services for enjoying an active stay in Francavilla al Mare, surrounded by the sea, beach and seafront, with facilities dedicated to sport and well-being.
